Cow and Calf Circular

Start time: 10:30
(Estimated finish time: 13:00)
Moderate 6.5 miles / 10.5 km
Parking at the top end of Moor Road, opposite Swiss cottage at Burley Woodhead. We entre Ilkley Moor and immediately encounter a stiff uphill stretch for some twentyminutes. Don’t be put you off, the exertion is rewarded with magnificent views across the Wharfe Valley. A working pole would assist on this part of the walk, includingwalking down and up a small gulley. We pass the appropriately named Pancake rock on our way the famous Cow and Calf rocks where we stop for a tea break. The Cow and Calf Rocks (also known as Hangingstone Rocks) are composed of millstone grit and comprise one large and one small rock (hence Cow and Calf). Behind these is a quarry whose walls are popular with climbers. From the Cow and Calf, we make our way to Ilkley Golf course, crossing the golf course, walking a quiet country lane and fields towards the main A659 road. Just 300 yards along the road, we take a footpath over meadows to the Sun Lane nature reserve, Burley in Wharfedale, before strolling uphill through pleasant fields to join a quiet country lane taking us back to Moor Road. A varied and enjoyable 7-mile walk.
