This is a circular walk
A walk of some charm and considerable variety. We begin with a busy, hilly morning, but this is then mitigated by a much less demanding afternoon. Starting from Rhiwderin, we make our way entertainingly up the Sirhowey Valley Footpath to the top of Mynnyd Machen and its wonderful views. We then descend to Machen before a forestry walk leads us past old lead-mine workings to delightful Draethen, and lunch.
Thereafter, we make our way up to Ruperra Castle with its unique motte, before descending to the River Rhymney and crossing it via the restored iron bridge. We then follow the river, passing through fields and woodlands, finishing with a circuit of a fishing-lake before we get back to our start point. Should be a good day.
