Start time: 10:00
(Estimated finish time: 16:45)
Moderate 12.5 miles / 20.1 km
The walk starts near the village of Holcombe, just above Ramsbottom. We begin below Peel Tower, a monument built in 1852, following the line of the ridge and eventually climbing up onto Holcombe Moor at Beetle Hill.
We circle Tor Hill, a flat topped hill overlooking the village of Helmshore and across to Haslingden, which separates the Alden valley to its south and Musbury valley to its north, before joining part of the Rossendale Way. Returning across Holcombe moor to Harcles Hill and Peel Tower, we essentially complete a figure of eight back to where we started.
If the weather is clear we should have views across Manchester and beyond.
This is a moderate walk however it is very undulating and includes a total of around 600m of ascent, as well as a distance of approx 12.5 miles. There are also some boggy sections of the walk around Tor Hill so you may want to wear to gaiters.
The starting point is Lumb Carr Road car park, just outside Holcombe village. Nearest postcode is BL8 4NN. If you come through Holcombe village, the car park is a bit after the pub on the left. If you come from the bottom of the hill its on the right and if you reach the pub, you’ve gone too far.
The car park is free. It is not a huge car park and popular with dog walkers and others visiting Peel Tower so please consider car sharing where possible. There are no toilets at the start.
