This is a circular walk
The long walk on Sunday 20th Jan is in effect two walks! We will walk the SMDC Lapwing walk “Woods and Ways around Oakamoor”. You can download a leaflet from the SMDC web site.
The walk is 3 miles. We will be equipped with hammer, nails and yellow Lapwing Walk discs and ensure the walk is well signposted and we will check the styles and gates.
We will start and finish at the Cricketers’ Arms in Oakamoor. Meet at Vicarage Rd at 9.30 or Oakamoor at 10.00am. There is a small car park opposite the Cricketers’ Arms but if this is full there is a larger car park behind the Cricketers’ Arms.
If you would like to join us for only the 3 mile walk you are most welcome.
The second walk also starts and finishes in Oakamoor. . The walk is about 5 miles.
The second walk crosses the old quarry and the site of the proposed Moneystone Park. Planning permission has been granted to Laver Leisure to develop a holiday village on the former sand quarry.
The project raises some interesting footpath issues which Ramblers should be aware of. One of the conditions of the planning permission is that Laver Leisure develop a network of footpaths and cycleways and, for example, provide a path to Oakamoor.
The old railway line between Froghall and Oakamoor has not been used as a railway line for many years and has been used as a footpath and cycle path for many years. The old railway line east of Oakamoor is a well established footpath and cycle path. It would be a great facility to have a continuous footpath from Froghall to Denstone. I have searched the web to find what is happening to the footpaths in the area but little information is available.
There is a well used, but unmarked, path from Churnet View Road in Oakamoor to the old railway line. We should ensure this path is included in the definitive map. We have until 2026 to get all such unofficial paths onto the definitive map.
I see on the OS map there is a Churnet Way which runs from Tittesworth to Denstone. I can’t find much about the path, but it seems very old. Much of it has be superseded by the Staffordshire Way. Has anyone got a book or information?
