What the Dickens
Wednesday, 17 April 2019
Start time: 10:00
Moderate 12 miles / 19.3 km
Follow in Pip's footsteps across the flat land that inspired the opening chapters of Great Expectations. Stand on the edge of the Thames and imagine the prison hulks moored there. You may even hear a distant boom, like a canon telling of an escaped convict. Cross the marshes to lunch at the Six Bells, Cliffe or picnic in the nearby churchyard.. In the afternoon see Pip's graves in the churchyard at Cooling. This is a no shade walk. If sunny, bring sun block. If raining heavily, consider not coming. This walk starts with a hill but is otherwise flat.
Meet at RSPB Northward Hill car park. Turn left off A228 onto Dux Ct Road towards High Halstow. At top of hill turn left onto Cooling Rd. After about 1m turn right at sign to RSPB. Follow track for 0.4m. The car park is small. Please car share if possible. For SatNavs with POI use RSPB Northward Hill.
