Start time: 10:30
(Estimated finish time: 15:00)
Moderate 10 miles / 16.1 km
10 mile moderate with 1 strenuous climb
This walk starts off on the slopes off on the low slopes of Helvellyn leading up the valley towards St John's in the Vale. We then pass over the Thirlmere dam to walk through forest paths to reach Raven Crag and the castle fort. This is the only sharp ascent on the walk and relatively soon over. From Raven Crag we then pass down along the shores of Thirlmere back to the car park.
There are some surprising valley views on the walk and the sight of Raven Crag towering above is a highlight.
The Swirls car park was not charging when the walk was reccied but this may change. This car park is popular with those going up Helvellyn so whilst it is a large car park it may be wise to car share where possible. There is a small overflow CP across the road.
Directions: From the M6 head to Ambleside and then Grasmere. At the mini roundabout turning left to Grasmere carry straight on up the A591 towards Keswick. Ignore the car park on the left at the base of the lake. Swirls car park is halfway along the lake on the right... the road begins to bends just before you get to it and the forest cover lessons.
