Birdsong and the wood anemones.
This is a circular walk
IMPORTANT - If you use a satnav, the pub's postcode will take you to the wrong place.
How to find the pub
Leave the M27 at exit 1. Take the 3rd exit from the roundabout, heading for Brook. In Brook, look out for the Green Dragon pub on the left. Shortly after this the road forks, the main road veering right and the road you want going effectively straight ahead (though you have to turn left off the main road), signposted Fordingbridge. Make a note of your mileage at this point because the next turning is easy to miss. 1.4 miles after this fork, shortly after you emerge from the trees, turn left, signposted Fritham. There are no prior warning signs for this junction.
1.6 miles from this junction (having driven through Fritham) turn right onto the old airfield, signposted Linwood. Carry on for 2.5 miles until you get to a T-junction, where you turn right. You are now on a single track road which has been improved by the addition of passing places. Again note your mileage, because 1.3 miles further on there is a green sign on the left for the High Corner Inn, pointing down a rough-looking track on the right. This track is in much better shape than usual, many of the potholes having been filled in, but there are a few left so don't go too fast. Eventually you start to descend a hill; the High Corner Inn is at the bottom. Please park in the first car park on the left. The journey time from Winchester is about 35 minutes.
Now for the walk itself! It is entirely on good tracks with no stiles and no steep hills. At one point we have to ford a small stream, but the water is only about an inch deep, so there is no problem when wearing walking boots. We walk in woodland and across heathland, heading roughly in the direction of Fritham, but not reaching it . You will hear much birdsong and the wood anemones are starting to appear. This is a delightful walk in the heart of the New Forest, the excellence of the paths making up for the fact that it is slightly over 5 miles.
The Inn will be open from 10am to take our food orders etc; we will start walking at 10.30. If you would like to go on this walk please let us know by 6.30pm on Wednesday 17th, particularly stating whether you would like to stay for lunch.
