Start time: 13:00
(Estimated finish time: 17:30)
Moderate 10 miles / 16.1 km
NOTE – YOU CAN JUST JOIN THIS WALK OR COMBINE IT WITH THE ONE SCHEDULED IN THE MORNING – See ‘Butterfly Walk 1’ for details
This is intended as a more substantial walk for those wanting to stretch out a bit further than Walk 1. You could join Walk 1 group at 12.30 for the lunch break at the Moot – an unusual historic earthwork - or even have your carvery lunch (possibly available from 12) at The Bull in Downton. This second stretch follows the Avon Valley Path southwards, including places of interest by passing two stately homes (Hale and, more closely, Breamore and possible ice cream) as well as a little surprise in Breamore for railway enthusiasts. Varied terrain involving hill climb, woodland, field, village and river view as we cross the valley to return to Downton. Optional refreshments after at the Bat and Ball in Breamore
PS – there are no butterflies! – this is my poetic description of two linked walks which (sort of) resemble (here, mis-shapen) butterfly ‘wings’, with Downton itself as the ‘body’. Ah well…
Meet Point: Moot Car Park (free) at The Moot, Downton

What you need to consider:
Have lunch beforehand at 12.30-13.00 with Walk 1 group or before – there are some drink stops as this is a longer walk
Toilet visit - there are no facilities en route (apart from the odd hedge/tree, if that works for you)
Good walking shoes/boots – should be dry but check the forecast and be prepared for anything!
Bring enough drink for the walk
Dogs – assistance dogs only please
