Moderate 13 miles / 20.9 km
Please join me for a spring ramble of some 13 miles starting at Knettishall Heath. The walk will include the Angles Way, Devils Ditch, West Harling woods and the Peddars Way. We have a mid way café stop with generous outside seating for muddy types.
This walk starts at the main car park at Knettishall Heath country park which is run by SWT. Ample parking available and operational toilet (at time of writing). We walk over the river Little Ouse and pick up the Angles Way. This takes us past a great view of Riddlesworth Hall school. We continue on and pass through Gasthorpe where we take a left turn north past the ruins of St. Nicolas' church and towards the Devils Ditch. A short section of the A1066 will require navigating. Once on the ditch we walk for about a mile before entering the corner of East Harling heath commonly known as ‘The Gallops’. We now wend our way on forestry roads, paths and some single track across West Harling heath, Big Wood, and West Harling common with views of the river Thet and on to our lunch stop at Thorpe woodlands. The café offers hot food and beverages if you don’t have a packed lunch.
After lunch we will exit the forest and pick up the Peddars Way south and back towards Knettishall. Initially on open farm land and then through the picturesque Rushford heath. We cross onto the Icknield way briefly before finishing around Knettishall Heath which has a charm all of its own…..
Car parking is free at Knettishall (nearest postcode IP22 2TE)
