Strenuous 10.5 miles / 16.9 km
A walk from Aberllefenni exploring the valleys of Cwm Ratgoed and Cwm Hen-gae and the mountain ridge between them. The route starts with a stroll along easy tracks and paths near the Afon Dulas. Crossing the river and a lane, we make our way into Cwm Ratgoed, once a busy slate-quarrying area but now quiet forestry and green grazing fields. From here we begin a long, steady ascent through the trees, eventually emerging to reach a ladder stile on the ridge of Mynydd Ceiswyn, with an awe-inspiring view of the ridges of Cadair Idris. A mile and a half of easy walking along the undulating ridge, with continuing views of Cadair Idris and the Rhinogydd, brings us to the 670 metre summit of Waun-oer, the high-point of our walk. We return to the ladder stile and then head down steeply to join a cycle trail in the valley below, soon leaving this to follow a footpath through the lush vegetation of Cwm Hen-gae. As we near Aberllefenni, our path leads past quarry remains from where a short stretch along the road brings us back to the start.
