Moderate 9.8 miles / 15.8 km
This circular walk includes a hill, sections of the Pennine way, meadows, good views (hopefully), lots of moorland and some canal-side walking.
Much of the route is high up along open moorland which is very exposed, and almost always windy, including where we stop for a lunch break. Please bring warm clothing and waterproofs, and wear walking boots. The paths are rough and the stone sections can be slippery.
After leaving Todmorden along the canal, the route ascends Stoodley Pike via the village of Mankinholes. The climb is mainly gradual with a couple of steeper sections as we reach the top.
We will eat our packed lunches next to the monument at the top of the hill. There are steps within the monument which you can climb up. It is very dark inside so you might want to bring a torch.
The remainder of the walk has panoramic views before the short sharp descent into Todmorden.
Optional drinks afterwards at Wetherspoons opposite the train station. Other refreshment options in Todmorden which may also be open.
Arriving By Train: The walk leader will be making use of the free car park at New Pudsey station and catching the train from Leeds as it passes through there.
Arriving By Car: Parking can be found in Todmorden town centre. Parking very near to the station is restricted. Allow extra time to find a suitable parking spot. The train station car park is for rail users only.
The walk leader plans to catch the train which is due to leave New Pudsey at 0929 and arrive at Todmorden at 1008.
Please note there are no toilets at Todmorden train station.
