Walk update 4/10/21: we will follow the route in reverse, visiting the Fort Nelson site first (Note: the fort and cafe are closed on Tuesdays), then across to Portchester Common and down the hill to Portchester Castle. Back along the shore path to the start, Most of the route on good paths, quite a few pavements, just occassional muddy parts. We follow the shore path along to Portchester Castle then go noth to reach Portchester Common then to Nelson's Monument and Fort Nelson. Then we follow paths and an old lane down the hill. Some sections through Portchester are on the footway beside roads.
The cafe at the Fort may not be open to non-Fort visitors so please bring your own refreshments.
Park in the public car park (turn right under barrier) by the Wicor Recreation sports fields at the end of Cranleigh Road. Height barrier of about 2.1 m.

This is a circular walk
The route should be good underfoot. Some sections are on the footway beside roads. The A27 is crossed either by controlled lights or underpass. Update 4/10/21: we may stop at the cafe at the church in the Castle walls (about 4.5 miles)
Please bring your own refreshments and hand sanitiser. Public toilets available near Portchester Castle after about 4 miles
Good views down Portsmouth Harbour and from the hill.
