This circular walk starts from the very impressive Maiden Castle, one of the largest and most complex Iron Age hillforts in Europe. It visits the historic sheep wash in Martinstown. If conditions are favourable, we stop for lunch at Hardy’s monument with fantastic views. We also walk a section of the South Dorset Ridgeway.
From the Maiden Castle car park, we follows farm tracks and footpaths to Martinstown (AKA Winterbourne St.Martin), where we pass the church and historic sheep wash before heading on to Winterbourne Steepleton. We have to walk along a short road section. From Winterbourne Steepleton we have a long moderately steep hill to climb, followed by a long walk across farmland towards Hardy’s Monument. Depending on the conditions on the day, we can either stop at Hardy’s Monument for lunch, or if bad weather, take a shortcut. The walk then follows the South Dorset Ridgeway east, with fine views in all directions. After approximately 2.5 miles, we turn North and follow a path across farmland back to Maiden Castle, where there is the opportunity to fully explore this ancient landmark for those that

Bring drinks, snacks and a packed lunch to keep you going.
Some of the paths may be uneven, muddy, and contain sheep and / or cows.
Check the weather forecast before hand and dress appropriately; layers and good waterproof walking boots are recommended. The South Dorset Ridgeway is quite exposed in bad weather.
Unfortunately no toilets on the walk but plenty of cover in quiet areas.
