Start time: 10:00
(Estimated finish time: 15:00)
Moderate 10.5 miles / 16.9 km
The last of four available days walking in and around the area of Porlock in Somerset. Please see separate Porlock event section of the 4050s walks page for fuller details.
All participants are responsible for their own health and fitness to undertake this walk / programme. Our group walks at a fairly brisk pace, so it’s important you are used to walking hilly terrain and over these distances. Please contact us in advance if you have any concerns.
This circular walk begins high up on Exmoor at Webbers Post with beautiful views of the wooded river valley and hills beyond. It’s a staging post (with a large car park) to make the climb toward Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on the moor. We follow well-worn paths through the moor’s rugged heathland, gaining views of the Bristol Channel and Wales (on a good day).
Eventually reaching the Beacon to take in the panoramic views, we track the ridge for a while before dropping down, meandering across the heathland and eventually joining the long river run down through Horner Wood, grabbing lunch while absorbing the calm of this ancient woodland, before a final steep ascent to our start point.
