Start time: 19:00
(Estimated finish time: 21:00)
Leisurely 5 miles / 8.1 km
This walk is limited to 20 people including the leader.
An evening walk tying in with Stag Walkers’ 15th anniversary; the last of three routes of 5 miles each which combine to cover 15 miles. These walks visit 15 parks, open spaces and nature reserves around Hitchin. Join us for any or all of these!
This third walk covers the east of Hitchin, exploring the Purwell river valley. Starting near the centre of town we ascend through the avenues and across Benslow Field, then through the streets to the edge of town. We’ll visit the nature reserves at Purwell Ninesprings and Purwell Meadows and follow the River Purwell through Walsworth Common. At Burymead Springs we’ll pause by the lagoon and might spot some birds among the reeds. We then take the hidden Purwell River Walk back towards town, passing a WW2 pillbox by Ransom’s Rec before heading through the park and back to our start point.
If you missed either of the previous walks, these will be repeated as a daytime 'petal' walk on Sunday 17th July.
Booking your place: If you would like to join, you must book in advance using the Stag Walkers Meetup group - see Notes for how to book & what to bring. If you are unable to attend, please cancel your booking so that someone else can take your place.
Please do not turn up for a walk without booking, as places are limited. Unless you opt in to further communications, we will only use contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk.
Queen Mother Theatre car park, Woodside, Walsworth Road, Hitchin, SG4 9SP (free parking after 6pm). Accessible by public transport: start point is 10 minutes' walk from Hitchin railway station and close to Hitchin town centre.

Use our Meetup group to book your place on the walk: https://www.meetup.com/StagWalkers/
Book your place by clicking the ‘Attend’ button when RSVPs are open. RSVPs open 6pm two weeks before the walk takes place. If the walk is full, click ‘join waitlist’ and you will be added if a place becomes available.
DO NOT book onto a walk unless you are pretty sure you will be able to make it.
UPDATE YOUR RSVP. We understand ‘life happens’ so if you need to change your RSVP please do this at least 24 hours before the walk and before booking closes to enable someone else to take your place.
DON’T NO-SHOW on the day unless it is absolutely unavoidable (we do understand ‘life happens’) because it prevents others from enjoying a walk when we are limited in the number of spaces.
*TAKE NOTE that if you no-show and/or cancel after the booking closing deadline three times, without extenuating circumstances, we will decline further bookings from you for a period of six weeks.*
Bring a packed lunch / snacks and drinks, and optionally a basic first aid kit, hand sanitiser and face covering.
When travelling to and from the walk, follow the latest advice from government and transport operators to keep yourself and others safe.
