Strenuous 11 miles / 17.7 km
Moderate/Strenuous return walk of 11 miles/17.5 kms Ascent: 2,657 feet. BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL - please contact the walk leader David using the contact details below to book, or if you have any questions, by the Thursday evening prior to the walk.
Start from Invermark car park (DD9 7YZ) at end of Glen Esk OS Landranger 44 GR NO446803.
Climbing the most easterly Munro, Mount Keen. Returning by the same route.
We’re starting early as this is a popular climb during the summer and parking fills up quickly. It’s recommended that you car share where possible.
Following the landrover track along Glen Mark to the Queen’s Well. This marks the site of a spring used by Queen Victoria on one of her pony treks in the Angus hills.
We have an easy burn crossing ( in dry conditions ) here, before proceeding up the ladder track. We climb steadily up to the moorlands above with excellent views back down to Glen Esk.
This is part of the original route of the Mounth Road used by Aberdeenshire cattle drovers on their way south. We then branch off towards the summit, where we get wonderful views of the surrounding moorland plateau, as well as west toward the rockier Lochnagar and north to Glen Tanar.
Walking mostly on landrover tracks, and rougher stony paths. There are a couple of rockier sections before the boulder summit cone of Mount Keen.
This is a Munro, and it does require a reasonable level of fitness and care in those attempting it.
