Strenuous 11 miles / 17.7 km
A high level South Dartmoor walk, starting from the free car park by Ivybridge railway station at 10am. The total distance will be 11 miles and we'll start by visiting Western Beacon (good view down towards Ivybridge), followed by Butterdon Hill and then Ugborough Beacon (good view down towards South Brent and across the South Hams towards the coast). Then we turn northwestwards and head out across the moor to visit Spurrell's Cross, followed by Sharp Tor, from where there is a great view across the Erme Valley. We then drop down into the valley and visit Piles Copse, one of the three remaining fragments of the ancient oak woodland that used to cover much of Dartmoor, before returning to the starting point.
I have described the walk as strenuous because much of it involves walking across open moorland. However, compared to most of Dartmoor's open moorland the conditions underfoot are relatively good, and so I think 'mostly moderate with just a bit of strenuous every now and then' would be the most accurate description of the terrain. That said the moor is a little bit prickly in places from patches of low lying Gorse, and there is also quite a lot of bracken on the descent to Piles Copse, so I would suggest wearing long trousers rather than shorts.
