Walking helps you stay healthy, live longer and keep happy. Walking regularly reduces the risk of numerous serious diseases and can help manage and recover from a range of medical conditions. It’s a low impact exercise that almost everyone can participate in for free without any special clothing or equipment.
To help you, we support a range of schemes across Britain that provide regular short and easy walks with trained leaders. Walks are run by a variety of organisations, including councils, the NHS, voluntary bodies and charities, drawing on national resources and support. They are particularly aimed at people who don’t take much exercise or who need support to stay active.
We run Walking for Health, England’s national network of health walk schemes with support from Sport England.
