Walks difficulty
Bear in mind the distance of the walk, differences in terrain and the possibility of bad weather, which can make a walk more difficult than planned. If you are unsure of your fitness level, try a short walk first - it's much better to find a walk a little slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted.
Walks grading
Walk grades are provided as a general guide only. If you have any doubt about your fitness for a particular walk, please phone the leader in advance. Some groups use their own local grading system but ours is more or less in line with Ramblers guidelines.
Many walks in our area are likely to be hilly; they can also often be muddy, slippery and occasionally overgrown.
E) Easy – Gentle pace and easy terrain with the occasional obstruction such as stiles to negotiate.
(L) Leisurely – Leisurely pace over uneven ground. Will usually include some hills and obstructions. For the fitter person with some country walking experience.
(M) Moderate – For fairly fit people with country walking experience. Moderate pace; sustained climbs, steep ground and open country likely.
(S) Strenuous – For experienced country walkers of above average fitness. Generally a brisk pace, over rough ground and with a more demanding terrain. Sustained climbs/descents, typically over longer distances.
NB Many walks are graded strenuous because of the terrain and/or distance and are often walked at a moderate pace. You can always telephone the leader in advance for more information.
