Easter Hot X Bun Walk from The Tors Inn, Belstone, Dartmoor

East Devon Group’s 50th Birthday Celebration

Our Group’s 50th birthday celebration, postponed from 2020, was held on Thursday 7th July 2022 at the Oak Lodge, Budleigh Salterton Riding School, Dalditch Lane, Budleigh Salterton, EX9 7AS starting at 3.30pm.

Celebration of the life of William Davey

Many of you will have already heard the very sad news that one of our longstanding and popular members, William Davey, died at the end of March after a long illness.  Those who knew William will particularly remember his cheerfulness and sense of humour, but he was also a very committed Rambler and a good walk leader who took his duty of care to his walking companions very seriously.   He had been a Ramblers member for over 30 years, and Membership Secretary for 7 years until he stepped down last summer as his health deteriorated.

One of William's favourite areas to walk was Dartmoor, and indeed he went to live on the edge of Dartmoor 4 years ago.  He regularly led one of the very popular Good Friday walks from Belstone.  To celebrate William's life, his good friend and companion Sue Raffill is organising a 5-mile walk from Belstone on Saturday 11th June, starting from the car park at 10.30 am.  Sue invites all those who knew William to join her and family and friends.  Bring a picnic to eat together outdoors afterwards in true rambler style (in the village hall if bad weather) followed by a few words to be said for William.  Anyone who has any stories or comments will be very welcome to contribute.

If you are planning to attend, it would be helpful if you could send an email to EDRamblersSocial@gmail.com with the word "William" as the subject, and we'll pass it on to Sue (although Sue is also happy for people just to turn up if they find they are free on the day).

PAYMENTS FOR SOCIAL EVENTS BY BANK TRANSFER.

Our bank has now imposed a fee for each cheque deposited in our account.  In order to minimise our costs it would be very helpful if members would pay for social events by bank transfer, which is free, quicker and more convenient for the organiser.

Bank details are: Account Number 20150354   Sort Code 60-83-01

  • Please idenity your payment with your name, and advise the organiser.
  • If you are unable to pay in this way we will continue to accept cheques.

Look carefully through the programme, there are often a number of walks with the possibility of food and beverages afterwards.

  • Some Friday half day walks may offer an optional lunch at the end, usually in a public house, and some all day walks may finish at a cafe for tea and cake.
  • It is always good to support local cafes and hostelries especially those that have kindly let us use their car parks for our walks.
  • The monthly Thursday evening walks in the summer almost certainly finish with a drink option.
