CURLEW AND LAPWING SOS!

The Tanat to Perry Community Wildlife group was set up to study the local populations of Curlew and Lapwing as their numbers both locally and nationally have plumeted in recent years.  As Oswestry Ramblers members are out and about in the countryside all the time, you may like to be involved in this project and your local knowledge would be valuable.  You do not need to be an expert birdwatcher.  If you would like to help in the project, please contact Claire Backshall tpcwg@shropscwgs.org.uk.  Further info on the 2019 survey and how you can help is here.

2019 OSWESTRY RAMBLERS HOLIDAYS

1. May 20-23 2019 (incl). Aberdaron, Gwynedd

We had a great  time in Aberdaron, super walks and good weather! Many thanks to Huw and Janet for planning and leading the walks and to Barbara for organising the admin and the group dinner.

2. October 11-14 2019 (incl). Selworthy, Devon.

We have now booked places on this holiday and paid deposits.  If anyone still wishes to come please contact Ceinwen on 01691 661714.  It is a 3-nights HF holiday based at Holnicote House in the Exmoor National Park with walks on the coast and on Exmoor. The cost is £299 per person which covers full board (incl packed lunches), choice of 3 guided walks on 2 days and transport from the house to and from walks.

UPDATE ON OUR COMMITTEE. Following our AGM in November 2018, our new Chair is Lorna Gwilliam. Diane Gray has also joined the Committee. Barbara Pryce-Jones remains as social secretary but is being replaced by Colin Chandler as membership secretary. Huw Jones is standing down from the Committee (but is still organising the walks for our Aberdaron holiday). Many thanks to Bruce (our outgoing Chair), Barbara and Huw for all their efforts. Other roles remain the same. For details see Contact the Committee page.

OSWALD'S TRAIL - NEW TRAIL GUIDE.  Have you tried out this circular route around Oswestry?  It is a 13 mile or 11 mile circuit or can be done in sections.  We have (July 2019) produced a revised trail guide, including a shortcut along the railway from Wilfred Owen Green.  The guide is now available to download here and paper copies will be available in local libraries, TICs, community centres etc. Feedback to webmaster@oswestryramblers.org.uk is very welcome.

SHROPSHIRE WAY

The whole of the new main route of the Shropshire Way is now complete and waymarked with improved paths, stiles and gates. For more information see the website and newsletter (May 2019). Sorting out the route is a huge achievement and we will definitely be using it for walks in the future. A new guidebook is being written by John Gillham and will be available Sept 2019.  He has produced a 15 minute film which is available here on YouTube

To celebrate the completion of the main route there will be a festival week of walks featuring the Shropshire way from 21st - 28th September.  This will include a celebration event (walk, cream tea etc) on Saturday 28th September in Shrewsbury. More information to follow soon.
