A Warm Welcome

New Member's Welcome

If you have recently joined the Ramblers, welcome to the East Staffordshire Group.

If you haven't already tried out one of our walks, take a look at the Walks Programme and choose one that interests you. There is a short description of their grading at the bottom of this page

If you are in any doubt about which would suit you, give the leader a ring. Introduce yourself and you will be given a warm welcome.

All our walks have a coffee stop (when we can have a good chat) so bring along something to drink (doesn't have to be coffee) and for the longer walks you will need extra drinks and a packed lunch.

On winter walks you will need several warm but thin layers of clothing and a waterproof jacket and trousers (just in case) and some waterproof boots (some leaders love to find the mud - we even have a trophy for the one who finds the most).

Many of our members wear gaiters to deflect mud and rain from the tops of boots.
On cold days you may also need gloves and a warm woolly hat. A walking pole or poles are optional - some members use them - some don't. Use whatever helps you to walk confidently and comfortably.

On summer walks you will need even more drinks so that you do not get dehydrated.
You also need to wear lighter-weight clothing to keep cool and a lighter pair of boots.

We hope you will enjoy walking with us & look forward to meeting you.

Walk Grading

The level of difficulty of the walks is based on the code used by The Ramblers.

Easy Walks for anyone who does not have mobility difficulty or specific health problems or is seriously unfit.  Comfortable shoes or trainers can be worn.

Leisurely Walks for reasonably fit people with at least a little country walking experience. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are recommended.

Moderate Walks for people with country walking experience and a good level of fitness. May include some steep paths and open country, and may be at a brisk pace. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are essential.

Strenuous Walks for experienced country walkers with an above average fitness level. May include hills and rough country, and may be at a brisk pace. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are essential.

Anyone in doubt about their fitness is advised to contact the organiser or leader in advance.
