Overview

This walk starts and finishes at the East Anglian Railway Museum, at Chappel and Wakes Colne railway station.

Meet at 10.20am (when my train arrives) for a 10.30am start.

The first loop is about 5 miles and takes us to the west of Chappel, including walks through sheep pasture and Chalkney Wood before returning to Chappel viaduct, where we will eat our packed lunches. There are a few benches to sit on here. For those who only want to do the first loop, it is an easy 10 minute walk from here by road, back to the start point.

The second loop takes us to the east of Chappel, along the Essex Way beside the River Colne to Ford Street before heading north and west again, back to the start point. This section is about 5.5 miles.

The route has a few significant inclines (for Essex) and is likely to be muddy and wet in places, so please be prepared for the conditions.

Parking and toilets are available at the start (at East Anglian Railway Museum), but please note that the Museum is a charity and if you are parking in their car park or using their loos, please make a donation to the Museum at visitor reception (where the toilets are) or via the Paypal link on their website (see link below).

Please bring a packed lunch and enough to drink
