Join me on this pleasant walk in the countryside around Compton Dando, just south of Bath. We will start from outside the Compton Inn and head along the River Chew towards the pretty village of Woollard and the church at Publow where we will stop for Coffee. We will then pass through the outskirts of Pensford before returning across country to Compton Dando. The terrain will be undulating but nothing too difficult and this is an area with very few stiles (although we may find a couple). Weather permitting, there will be lovely countryside views. Bring refreshments for coffee and lunch stops
Woollard suffered badly in the floods of 1968 and there are plaques to commemorate the loss of the old bridge and the height the waters reached. We may even see alpacas - Bell farm offers walks with the alpacas to children. Pensford was the home of Aker Bilk ("stranger on the shore". He is buried in Publow churchyard where we will stop for coffee and there is a commemorative bench on our route,
Most off the walk will be on paths and tracks, though we will be on roads through the villages and for a short period on the way back to Compton Dando. Hopefully, the present muddy conditions will have ameliorated by February.
