Well, eventually, I did a recce of this walk, together with John W., just yesterday. In the end the walk was OK, except for one place, which I think we will need to divert round. The walk is largely on wide tracks or bridleways. It goes from Arreton on paths to reach the Sandown railway path, and follows this to where we turn off for Kingston. From Kingston we take the bridleway that goes through Kern and up to the road that passes the Seamark. We go over the tumulus and down to Ashey station, take the road up towards Upton, go over the rather beautiful fields to Havenstreet, and then go on a track to Combley. From here we may choose to go a different way home, depending on the time, but yesterday we went from here to the recycling station and round paths going over the top of the downs and back by Great East Standen Manor.
It was apparently over 14 miles, but that can be reduced by choosing a different workaround when we have to divert. There are quite a lot of stiles, and they are not necessarily in great condition! I had it down at 12.5 miles (pre-diversion!).
See you hopefully tomorrow.
New walkers welcome. If you are new to the Ramblers you can just turn up for any of our walks, unless we specify otherwise. We invite you to come along for three walks as a non-member.
Additional Notes
Depending on the weather, consider suitable, clothing, footwear, walking poles, sun cream, drinks, and food. Walking poles can be particularly useful in winter in helping you to stay upright! Watch out for ticks and remove ASAP. If you are unsure about your ability to undertake this walk, please contact the walks leader. If you need to leave the walking group, please ensure you inform the leader or back marker.
Please note that there may be short sections of road walking, so please walk in a single file and take good care.
Wise to look at the website on the day just in case of any changes or additional info. And in the event of extreme weather please check back for cancellation notices.
Emergencies
It's very rare that an emergency occurs, but we may need info about
