The intriguing story of Scammonden Cotton Spinning Mill which was built but never operated.
The mill was 100 ft in height and covered six floors and work began in 1861 and completed in 1865.
An interesting walk among the hills above Ripponden and the valleys of Barkisland encompassing the juxtaposition of the 19th century industrial rural hamlets and the 20th century engineering of dams and motorways. We will walk up and down valley sides and through ancient woods and farmlands on uneven and often muddy tracks.
This is a moderate walk but appropriate clothing, footwear and walking poles/sticks are highly recommended.
The ground conditions could be wet, slippy and boggy, good boots are required aswell as warm and waterproof clothing is essential as winter closes in
Bring a packed lunch and a warm drink as there are no refreshment facilities on this walk.
Well-behaved dogs on a short fixed lead are welcome.
