Overview

The intriguing story of Scammonden Cotton Spinning Mill which was built but never operated.

The mill was 100 ft in height and covered six floors and work began in 1861 and completed in 1865.

An interesting walk among the hills above Ripponden and the valleys of Barkisland encompassing the juxtaposition of the 19th century industrial rural hamlets and the 20th century engineering of dams and motorways.  We will walk up and down valley sides and through ancient woods and farmlands on uneven and often muddy tracks.

This is a moderate walk but appropriate clothing,  footwear and walking poles/sticks are highly recommended.
