IMPORTANT : we organise on meetup so please sign up via our web link below.
Meet outside the front of Ely railway station for a 10:30 departure, and a roughly 10½-mile walk exploring the countryside to the south and east of Ely.
After about 5½ miles we will reach the Kingfishers Bridge nature reserve, which boasts a café and toilets. We will stop for lunch outside the café. For the privilege of sitting on the picnic benches, and/or using their toilets, I suggest that we each buy something from the café. This could just be a drink to supplement your packed lunch - there is a great variety of milk shake flavours - or it could be something to eat.
Their menus are online here : https://www.kingfishersbridge.org/the_wren_cafe.html
Anyone getting the train from Cambridge should buy a return to Ely and catch the 10:03, which is also the 10:07 from Cambridge North, and which gets into Ely at 10:21.
Those driving have several options for parking:
- Ely railway station car park, £6 for the day;
- look for free parking on the streets off Back Hill or Broad Street - at this time on a Sunday morning there is a good chance you will find a space, but please allow time to do this then walk to the railway station;
- free parking at the Ship Lane car park (CB7 4BB) and the Forehill car park (entry from Broad Street, postcode CB7 4AJ), but in either case please then allow 10-15 minutes to walk to the railway station.
When recently recce'd, the route had one section which was somewhat overgrown with thistles and the odd nettle. It was quite passable if one was prepared to suffer the odd prick, and so those who prefer to wear shorts may decide that "the pain is worth the gain".
Bring a packed lunch, drink, and suncream as required, and wear suitable clothing for the weather on the day.
