Overview

Ditchling Beacon to Lewes via Kingston. Part of a series of Walks tackling the South Downs Way by public transport over the next few months.

Saturday, 15 November 2025
Start time:
9:55 am
Estimated finish time:
3:00 pm
Difficulty:
Moderate
Distance:
16km / 9.9mi
Ascent:
N/A
Type:
linear

A longish walk on mainly firm chalk tracks in the main but with two very steep and possibly slippery descents, so poles an advantage. Proper walking footwear required. Potentially, fabulous views.
The second half of the walk involves a long ascent of 200m to Kingston Hill and then a steep descent of 150m, so some stamina would be required.
It's possible to end the walk at the halfway point to avoid this tougher section and to return by bus at the A27.
Please bring a snack and water for a picnic on route. Lots of refreshments also needed at the end by Lewes Castle.
The 79 bus runs from the centre of Brighton via the Old Steine and the station to the start arriving at 0952. Times for other stops available at buses.co.uk
NT Parking (£) is available but limited at the start.

Assistance dogs only on this walk please.
