Overview

A walk through Bellburn Wood and the surrounding countryside, including the Deer Park in Bishop Auckland.

Wednesday, 7 May 2025
Start time:
10:30 am
Estimated finish time:
2:30 pm
Difficulty:
Moderate
Distance:
12.9km / 8.0mi
Ascent:
217.9m / 715ft
Type:
circular

We start the walk along the disused railway path from Binchester towards Byers Green, then following field paths to descend towards Belburn Wood, where hopefully the bluebells will still be in flower. We then ascend through more field paths and then down steep steps towards Bishop Auckland. After another ascent we go into the Deer Park where we will have lunch. We then return to the railway path and back to Binchester.

The walk may be muddy especially in the woods and on field paths, so good boots and walking poles recommended. There are a couple of minor but busy roads to cross, and a short section of road walking. There is a plank bridge over a ditch which is partly loose. Several stiles and gates.

Roadside parking in Binchester, please park with consideration for local residents.

Sheep and lambs in several fields so no dogs please.

The nearest pub to the walk is the Park Head Hotel bar, just off the A688.

Features

  • Refreshments available (Pub/cafe)
  • Car parking available
