Moderate, 12 mile, circular walk from The Crown Inn, The Batch, Churchill BS25 5PP. The walk follows a wide track SW to Star, crosses the A38 and gently climbs up through Shipham (crossing the Shipham road) and joins the West Mendip Way. From here the route passes through woods, open country and a short stretch of road. From Velvet Bottom, it heads up Rains Batch onto Black Down, (through the obligatory big puddle), and joins the Limestone Link. The last section follows the track through the former estate of Mendip Lodge. Arriving in Churchill, the route crosses the A38 and ends back at The Crown. The route is mostly dog friendly (and so is the pub) but note there are a few stiles en route and there are several rocky and uneven tracks.
Black Down is the highest hill in the Mendip Hills, Somerset, in south-western England. Black Down lies just a few miles eastward of the Bristol Channel at Weston-super-Mare, and provides a view over the Chew Valley.
