We will meet in front of the Abbey Inn (YO61 4BD), opposite Byland Abbey, and walk through fields to Oldstead and then up past Scots Corner to the top of Kilburn White Horse, with magnificant views on a fine day. We come down the side of the Horse, then follow the road to Kilburn, home of the famous 'Mouseman' wood carver, up to High Kilburn and back across fields to Oldstead, returning to Byland Abbey for refreshments at the Abbey Inn. There is a moderately steep climb up from Oldstead to Scots Corner, and a descent down uneven steps at the side of the Horse. Total ascent 1147 feet. The walk has been categorised as ‘strenuous’ as there are some sections of fairly steep ascent and descent and it is longer than usual, but a lot of the walk is easy walking through fields.
