Hello Everyone
We have a walk in memory of our former colleague Ched this Sunday organised by his good friends and neighbours Dave & Barb. The event retraces one of Ched's favourite routes from just outside of Church Stretton encompassing Caer Caradoc hill, delightful Cardington, then returning to our start point via Hope Bowdler. The ascent of Caer Caradoc is optional - we also have an easier way around it's base. Spectacular views in good weather. Nice wide paths and tracks in the main with some quiet lanes thrown in. Approximately a dozen stiles.
In overall terms this is a Moderate grade walk due to it's generally hilly nature, although please note that Caer Caradoc itself is very much classed as a Strenuous exercise. Again, this climb is optional. Some of us will take it, some won't.
As always you're most welcome to join us but please let us know if this is your very first walk with the group, so that we can at least look out for you at the start and then introduce you properly. Thank you.
Registration: 09.30. Walk start: 09.45. Walk leaders: Dave & Barbara (07946 614773)
⚠️No facilities at the start or during the walk. Toilets are available in Church Stretton (SY6 6BQ) via a short detour into town as you arrive. Details in the directions below.
Post walk refreshments venue to be decided.
Directions primarily for our own members or anyone arriving from the east via the M54 & A5.
The start is located 0.75 miles from central Church Stretton on the B4371 Much Wenlock road (Sandford Avenue locally) just as you crest the hill out of town on Sandford Avenue. Fastest route is via the M54>A5>A49>B4371.
Via either the A460 or A449 to pick up the M54 westbound and follow towards Wellington where the motorway reverts to the A5. Continue on the A5 for a further 10 miles to turn left at the third island onto the A49 signed for Leominster initially, and then locally for Church Stretton.
Proceed on the A49 for almost 11 miles to Church Stretton where turn left at the traffic lights onto the B4371, direction Much Wenlock, and proceed for 0.75 mile uphill where the start point lay-by is located on your left at the summit. Should this be full proceed for a further 300 yards where there is a small layby on your right plus a wide and stable grass verge at near enough the same point, necessitating a short walk back to the start point in the initial layby.
If you require loo's (SY6 6BQ) turn right off the A49 at the lights for Church Stretton town centre and then turn left into Easthope Road shortly after the pedestrian crossing lights. The toilets are situated approx 150 yards along Easthope Road and have a small parking bay opposite, but if full turn right into Lion Meadow then right again into the large car park. Afterwards, retrace back to the A49 lights where you continue straight across on the B4371 and onwards to the start. ⚠️Please allow at least ten minutes for this detour.
