City Canal Walk around Spaghetti Junction – Sunday 30th November
Meet by the sculpture of the Bull near the entrance to Birmingham Bullring B5 4BU,
(what3words allow.famed.navy) for a 10am start. This is close to New Street station and also easily accessed by bus.
This walk takes us along 3 canals, the Grand Union, the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal, and the Worcester and Birmingham Canal.
The distance is approximately 9 miles.
It is very much an urban walk with plenty of buildings that reflect the city’s industrial past and present. There are old railway bridges, a chance to inspect the progress of work on HS2, and some eye-catching graffiti. A lot of it is surprisingly peaceful, even though we pass under major roads and approach the edge of the M6.
Hazards: Low Canal Bridges – mind your head! Some areas of towpath may be slippery with fallen leaves. Good footwear is essential and a walking pole might be of use. We’ll also need to let cyclists go past.
NB: There are a lot of mini-ascents and descents over bridge sections. No cows or stiles!
