Overview

The walk over Matterdale Common is mainly rough moorland and is more peaceful than most of the Lake District.

Part of the Coast to Coast Cycle Route is shared with part of our walking path along Old Coach Road.

From the start, we follow the Old Coach Road, crossing Groove Beck and Mariel Bridge. After around 500m, go through gate and make way through bracken steadily up to White Pike. 

Then continue on rough path uphill to the summit of Clough Head (726m), then gently downhill to Calfhow Pike. We then ascend to Great Dodd (857m) where we have lunch.

We then proceed steadily downhill along Groove Beck and to the ford at Old Coach Road and back to the cars at High Row.

Turn off the A66 at Troutbeck onto the A5091. At Royal Hotel, Dockray turn right and follow the road to the car park area.
