Cox Green / Penshaw Monument

We head south east to the woods below Penshaw Monument and arrive to see beautiful views 360 degrees, this ancient Monument was built in 1844 by 1st Earl of Durham and on a clear day the Cheviot hills can be seen, and also try to spot the spire of Durham Cathedral . We continue on a downward decent to the River Wear and along the Weardale Way in Eastward direction taking in the views before taking our path back to the Old School House where good food awaits you.
Directions: From Chester le Street, take the A183 to Penshaw. Carry on past Herrington Country Park on your right. Shortly after the A183 becomes a dual carriageway, look out for a narrow road on the left, signed for Offerton and Cox Green (this is Foxcover Road). Go down the hill for just under a mile and look out for the entrance to the car park on your left, just before Coxgreen Road.
