We are the Cheshire Walkers. We open the way for everyone in our local community to enjoy the pleasures of walking.
This is the first of our three walks for the Ireland Trip in September. It's a relatively shorter walk of 9km/5.6 miles, designed to get us all ready for the main ascent at Carrauntoohil the following day. This first walk is challenging enough though, walking into a glen, crossing a river and ascending up to a corrie lake. The summit is Knocknapeasta with a scramble through some boulders. There are great views from the top down to the Black Valley and across to Carrauntoohil.
This walk is only open to members who are taking part in the Cheshire Walkers Group weekend away in Eire.
This is a circular walk starting from Cronin's Yard. We are doing the shorter 4 hr 9Km walk with an ascent of 840m. There is a choice of routes down from the summit, which will largely be dictated by the weather conditions on the day.
From Killarney: - Head west towards East Ave/N71 - Exit the roundabout onto College St/N71 - At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto Lewis Rd/N71 - At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto Upper Lewis Rd - Turn left onto N22 - At Cleeney Roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto Dr. Hans Liebherr Rd/N72 - At Ballydowney Roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto Ring of Kerry/N72 towards Killorglin for about 3 miles - After Fossa Village, turn left onto Gap Rd towards the Gap of Dunloe. Gap Road turns slightly left and becomes the L4040 towards Gortreagh - After about 2 miles, at the staggered crossroads (near Tomies Cross) turn right on to Cullina Road heading towards Dunloe - After about 5 miles (near Carhoonahone) you come to Kissane’s Shop and Maxol Service Station. Go over a small bridge and take the next left which is signposted for Cronin’s Yard and Tea Room, Carrauntoohil - After about 2 miles toward the end of this road, arrive at the Car Park at Cronins Yard, Meallis, Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland Time: 30 mins/12 miles approx.
