Meet in the car park of Downham Market railway station at 11:15, for a 7½-mile linear walk to Watlington, exploring some of the woodland, farmland and fenland of this part of south-west Norfolk. From Watlington you can get the train back to Downham Market, Cambridge, or wherever else you started from.
There's a possible toilet stop two miles into the walk at the Chequers pub in Wimbotsham, but the lunch stop will be four miles into the walk at the Heron pub at Stowbridge. We'll eat our packed lunches outside, then those who wish to can get a drink from the pub. The lunch stop might not be until about 1 p.m., so either make sure you've had a good or late breakfast, or bring snacks to keep you going.
At the end of the walk, anyone keen on a second pub stop could visit the Angel in Watlington, then catch a later train home; but as the Angel is nearly ½ mile beyond the railway station, this would add nearly a mile to your total distance.
If you are coming by train from Cambridge you should buy a return to Watlington, but get off at Downham Market. Catch the 10:33 from Cambridge, which arrives at Downham Market at 11:15. This train also stops at Cambridge North, Waterbeach, Ely and Littleport. The car park where we are meeting is on the west, or northbound, side of the tracks, i.e. the side you will get off on if you are coming from the Cambridge direction.
