The walk is mostly on good surfaces but there are a few slippery sections and decent footware is suggested.

 

Parking at Howlands is not allowed unless the Park and Ride bus is used.  There is free parking on a lay by 400m south on South Road outside the crematorium.  However, if this is not available (as is likely at present), there is free street parking on Richardby Crescent (the entrance across South Road from the lay-by.  If coming from within Durham, travel by bus is recommended.  The PR2 serves the Howlands site, or the No. 6 bus passes down South Road.
