West Mendip Walkers moderate 11.5 mile circular walk from East Somerset Railway’s Cranmore Station.
The heritage railway is 2.5 miles long. From the car park the walk heads northwest over the A361 and across fields towards the village of Chelynch. It then joins the East Mendip Way (EMW) heading east passing the 1050 ft Cranmore Tower, a folly built in the 1860’s, during WW2 it did service as a look-out tower by the home guard. From here the route continues along the EMW towards Downhead, turning south and then skirting the boundary of Torr Works quarry, the largest in the UK, it is a limestone quarry producing 7.5 million tonnes of limestone annually. Using the underpass cross the A361 and over fields, paths and tracks passing the east Cranmore Reservoir and onto a quiet lane the route returns to Cranmore Station.
