This is a perfect local walk for Easter Sunday, seeing the Spring flowers in the Vale at their best, lambs frolicking in the fields, donkeys braying in the field. We also encountered a friendly escapee hen guarding a stile when we were doing the recce, near where Alun Cairns lives.
The walk will take us out of the village towards the old slab footbridge known as the Clapper Bridge at Castle upon Alun, passing Coed y Bwl on our way with its array of colours from the spring flowers. Crossing the railway line, we make our way up towards the ridge above Corntown where there are differing views - Bridgend with its industrial units very prominent, the hills in the distance with the wind turbines standing proud and tall. Dropping down to the village we will visit Ewenny Priory which will be our lunch stop.
After lunch, we make our way back, crossing the stepping stones, also known as Stepsau Ddion - Black Steps, before making our way back up to the Common. The climb is a bit of a sting in the tail, but we'll be taking it easy, it is a Bank Holiday after all :-) but the views towards the coast are worth every effort.
