This walk starts with the drove road from Elsrickle to Walston – a typical gentle up and over route through open country. We then walk North East through the village to Borland Farm, where we turn right into a field heading up to the steep sided valley where the Walston Well//Chaleybeate is marked on the map. Coffee break here!
For the return, the route climbs to the head of the Chalybeate valley, following a quad bike track up to 421 metres, over moor grass and burned heather to join the fence path down from the summit of Black Mount. There are excellent views as we head down to re-join the drove road back to Elsrickle.
Meet at Biggar Corn Exchange to car share, or drive to the starting point.
This is a track on the left hand side of the A721, about 2/3 of the way through Elsrickle coming from the West (1/3 of the way through from the East). It’s signposted ‘Public Path to Walston’, labelled Wellbutts on the OS map.
There is parking on the main road in an old bus stop layby just before the track entrance, or beside Blackmount Cottage on the corner, and further along the track in front of the houses before Wellbutts Farm.
The walk will start about 9.45 and take about 3 hours. Please let me know if you are going straight to the start point.
