Esh is a pleasant village around five miles north-west of Durham. The central area of the village contains a stone cross, which probably replaced a former market cross. This is locally known as St Cuthberts Cross.
We will start from the village green and walk south down towards Flass Hall, dating from the 16th century, and is reputed once to have been visited by Oliver Cromwell. From there we will walk through Rag Path wood next to the River Deerness, before passing Esh Winning to turn north up towards Quebec.
This walk is a mixture of fields (which could be a little muddy), woodland, railway path, and a cemetery. As we will have dropped down into the Deerness Valley there is naturally an ascent to get us back to Esh, with one fairly steep climb of about 300 feet.
