Starting from a layby below the Storey Arms on the A470, we follow an easy uphill path, preparing us for a steep ascent on the side of Craig Cerrig glacial cwm. After a well-earned rest, we continue to the trig point at Fan Frynych for morning tea, and (hopefully) panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. We then skirt the Craig Cerrig Gleisiad Nature Reserve, to descend to an undulating track which we follow to our lunch stop near a small wood. From there, it’s another undulating walk through moorland and past fields to rejoin the path below the cwm leading back to the layby.
While the climb up the cwm is strenuous, you can do this in your own time, with rests during the climb. Appropriate footware (walking boots with good grip) is required, and a pole / stick is recommended for the climb. The paths can be wet, muddy and slippery in parts, depending on previous rain. There can also be low clouds hampering visibility. There is one, possibly two, stiles.
