Route Details:
From the cars we head towards the church, then take a small lane opposite which takes us onto field paths, passing by
Saxelbye Park.
Shortly after crossing a minor country road we take a left turn which takes us to Saxelbye, after crossing under the railway bridge that carries the Old Dalby Test Track line, which British Rail uses (among other things) for crashing Nuclear material containers - hopefully we won't be nuked on our way past...
We walk through the pretty village for a short while before returning to field paths and onwards to our coffee stop at the peaceful and isolated Welby Church, which is virtually the sole remnant of the medieval village.
After the break we head northwards, passing by Ash and Oak plantations before coming to the Nottingham road. We walk on this for a very short distance until we come to the trackbed of the old Midland Railway, which we follow the line for a few hundred yards before veering off onto paths that take us to Ab Kettleby, and our lunch stop at the Sugar Loaf pub.
Suitably refreshed, we continue out of the village as far as a T junction, then proceed straight across towards the village of Wartnaby. In the village we pass by the Friars Well estate, the one time weekend retreat of Baron King of Wartnaby, of British Airways fame.
The last leg of the walk takes us in a south westerly direction, passing over the Old Dalby Test Track again, before arriving back at Grimston.
