This walk is for up to 30 people, including the leader.
Part 11 of an epic long-distance trail around Hertfordshire - join us for any of these!
Please note this is a linear walk from Cuffley station to Broxbourne station - these are on different railway lines, see below for transport information.
If you want a woodland wander then this first part of the Hertfordshire Way's 'extension' from Cuffley to Hertford will certainly fit the bill, with most of the central section spent within Broxbourne Woods National Nature Reserve. This is Hertfordshire's only NNR and is also recognised as a Special Area of Conservation of European importance. Hopefully we'll be treated to a fine display of autumn colours as we wind our way through the woodland.
Top and tailing this section will be tracks, field paths, quiet lanes, stints through suburbia and finally a pleasant walk alongside the New River to take us into Broxbourne.
We will have a packed lunch stop along the way and given the time of year it may be a good idea to bring something waterproof to sit on. Unfortunately no pub stop this time!
Transport: Cuffley and Broxbourne are on different railway lines in/out of London and Hertford/Cambridge; Cuffley on the Hertford Loop (Kings Cross / Moorgate - Stevenage) and Broxbourne on the West Anglia Main Line (Liverpool St - Cambridge). The quickest public transport between them takes approx. 1 hour 5 mins (bus 641 between Broxbourne and Hertford North station then train from Hertford North to Cuffley).
Drivers may wish to park at Hertford North station to take the train to the walk start, then catch the bus back to Hertford North at the end. Due to the bus timetable it may be necessary to take the train from Broxbourne to Hertford East then walk approx 30mins to Hertford North (the walk leader will be heading to Hertford and can guide anyone taking this option).
Drivers may wish to arrange car sharing between the start and end point between themselves. Alternatively you can take trains from home and back, depending where you live.
Dogs are welcome on a lead.
For information about walking with the group, including our dog policy, please visit the Stag Walkers website.
Booking your place: Please book your place using the free Meetup website/app. Join the Stag Walkers Meetup group and click the 'Attend' button on the event page.
Please do not turn up for a walk without booking, as places are limited.
If the walk is fully booked, click 'join waitlist' to get a place if one becomes available and please check back regularly in case you do get a place. The waitlist gives priority to single bookings so if you wish to bring a guest, we recommend booking separately.
Unless you opt in to further communications, we will only use contact information you provide to get in touch about the walk.
This is a linear walk.
The start time is when we aim to start walking and the finish time is an estimate.
Walks are graded Easy, Leisurely, Moderate or Strenuous in increasing order of difficulty. Please read the walk description to check it is within your abilities and contact the group if you are unsure.
Please:
- DO NOT book onto a walk unless you are pretty sure you will be able to make it.
- UPDATE YOUR RSVP. We understand ‘life happens’ so if you need to change your RSVP please do this at least 24 hours before the walk and before booking closes to enable someone else to take your place.
- DON’T NO-SHOW on the day unless it is absolutely unavoidable (we do understand ‘life happens’) because it prevents others from enjoying a walk if it is fully booked.
- *TAKE NOTE that if you no-show three times, without extenuating circumstances, we will decline further bookings from you for a period of six weeks.*
- DO car-share or use public transport if possible. To offer a lift or ask for one from a fellow walker, please use the Meetup event page.
- BRING a packed lunch/snacks and drinks, appropriate clothing for the conditions and optionally a basic first aid kit.
- FOLLOW NHS guidelines and do not attend the walk if you are unwell.
