We start from the school car park at Hexton and proceed east towards Hitchin passing Deacon Hill (ascent optional) on geologically interesting Access land. Hacking across open farm land, we arrive at the hidden spring source of the River Oughton. Following this charming tree enclosed river downstream will take us eventually through the pretty local regional park at Westmill to Burford Ray bridge. Turning north crossing the bridge, we find the Icknield Way path and follow this west to Pirton where we picnic, close to the Motte & Bailey Pub. Then we venture west-northwest following the contours towards Apsley Bury Farm, before turning South to cross the wide open spaces of Hexton Common to finish. During the walk there are a few stiles, and occasional very short stretches of road, but all with adequate side-walks.
