This is a leisurely walk taking in Penton Hook Lock, a long stretch of the Thames Path, Laleham Park and highlights of Laleham Village. There is plenty of historical interest and some quirky cottages on the way. The walk is almost entirely flat and about half the paths are surfaced, the other half across grass and dirt paths which may be muddy after rain. No stiles. Bring a drink. Optional refreshments are available in Notcutts Garden Centre at the end of the walk.
Optional visit afterwards to Penton Hook Lock to look at the annual Veterans Cruise of the Dunkirk Little Ships. Listen to evocative 1940s music and see the beautifully preserved little ships that took part in the evacuation of soldiers from Dunkirk in 1940. (https://www.adls.org.uk/the-verterans-cruise).
Penton Hook Yacht Club has posted:
"We're delighted and honoured to, once again, be hosting the Association of Dunkirk Little Ships annual veteran's cruise this Saturday 13th September.
The historic Little Ships will assemble Friday and Saturday at PHYC with helpful support from Ben and his team at MDL Penton Hook Marina (thank you!).
We'll welcome our veterans during Saturday morning before they'll depart on the famous Little Ships at 12:30. Half the fleet will head straight through Penton Hook Lock heading for Staines before turning to head back towards Chertsey. The second half will first head downriver towards Chertsey, turning at the M3 bridge and back through Penton Hook Lock between approx 13:15-13:45 and heading upriver to turn at Staines.
Please give them a wave and cheer if you can make it along the river bank to see them!"
Please note that at this time Penton Hook Island is closed to the public until further notice.
