This is a walk with (weather permitting) spectacular views. Unlike the Lake District, you may find yourself as the only person on the route and not see another person until you get back onto the road. A short walk through Langholm quickly enters country roads which get more and more rural until they disappear. An easy but long climb eventually passes the summit of Calfield Rig (319m) and an easy track leads towards Black Knowe (326m), all the while with Naze Hill (331m) looking down on us from our right. From Black Knows we drop gently to Timpen Knowe and cross Timpen Sike before we can see Craigcleuch peeping out from trees a long way below us. A rapid descent takes us onto the quiet B709. After a short road section we cut back onto the Potholm road where we can join the River Esk riverside path for a sheltered journey back to Langholm. Passing the schools we then have the option of a quick getaway or a visit to the Buccleuch Centre for a coffee and possibly a piece of cake.
This walk is wet all year round and has areas of moss rushes growing so waterproof boots would be recommended as well as long legged trousers.
