From Gibson carpark, cross the Tweed by the Chain Bridge and continue through Gattonside. At the top of the village bear right up the track signposted to Earlston. Follow the track up through the woodland and continue through the gate on the uphill path with views of Melrose, the River Tweed and the Eildons. Coffee stop here.
Follow the track past woodland and across the Packman’s Burn (can be muddy). Continue to Sorrowlessfield Mains Farm and the Blainslie Road. At the foot cross the A68 main road and into the woodland towards the Leader Water and follow the Leaderfoot Path. We will have lunch close to Cowdenknowes House. The path emerges at the Smailholm road from where we cross the old bridge at Leaderfoot. From the viewpoint of the three bridges, we head up the old road to Newstead past the Trimontium interpretation panels and viewpoints. After leaving the village we join the Borders Abbeys Way and head back to Melrose, past the Abbey buildings.
Terrain: Good footpaths, except for one section which could be overgrown. Long trousers strongly advised. Also some minor roads. NB Care to be taken crossing one major road.
One steady but lengthy climb after leaving Gattonside (Goat’s Brae).
