Linear walk from Great Missenden Train Station. Meet at Matilda’s café, in the High St. 2 minutes walk. Note walk start time 10.15. “The Nelson Mandela Way” Section 8. The walk finishes at Wendover Train Station. Great Missenden and Wendover are just outside the Freedom Pass and Oyster Zone. Lunch at Firecrest Pub (bring a picnic)
I suggest you buy a return ticket for travel between Amersham (northern end of Metropolitan Line) and Wendover (Chiltern Railway) and use your oyster or Freedom Pass for the main part of the journey. The ticket needs to be bought before we get to Amersham (7 minutes between trains but they are on the same platform). I will buy my ticket at Shenfield, but you can buy the ticket online.
A lot of the walk is through open woods, so shaded if it is sunny. We will go to Coombe Hill the highest point in the Chilterns, with spectacular views and an impressive monument to the men who gave their lives in the Boer War. Virtually no road walking. A few minutes from the start and finish of the walk we will be in beautiful countryside.
If I don’t go by car I will get the 7.38 from Shenfield to Liverpool St. and then the 8.20 Metropolitan train from Liverpool St. to Amersham arriving at 9.25 and then the 9.32 Chilterns Railway train from Amersham to Great Missenden arriving at 9.39. Note trains to Great Missenden are hourly but half hourly for the return Journey. We could consider driving to the walk. Parking £1.20 Link Rd. HP16 9AE Free parking quarter of a mile from the café in Aylesbury Road or Frith hill.
Dinner, restaurant central London if we use the train.
